If you have low self esteem, you don't feel confident about yourself and the life that you live. This can be disastrous for your mental and physical well being. You can suffer from depression which can lead to serious health complications.
Knowing how to build self esteem is important in order to fight against it. This is so you can have a better appreciation of yourself and see yourself in a more positive light
1. Knowing yourself is important. After all you are the central character that can tilt the balance between having a high or low self esteem.
You decide whether to let outside factors affect you inside - that is to say whether the negative influence that surrounds you will adversely affect you or if you will use them to better yourself in order to rise above them.
Criticisms by friends, family and co-workers tend to strip away at our self worth, thereby eroding our confidence in ourselves.
Understanding yourself helps you understand the truths about these criticisms and help in your decision to either accept or reject them.
2. Another method in building self esteem is to keep telling yourself that you're a person worth loving and that you deserve to be happy just like the rest of the world.
These are what are called self affirmations - or affirming the positive aspects of your existence. Just as it suggest you make a list of everything that's good about yourself and keep reminding yourself that every day.
It can be as simple as telling yourself that every time you wake up in the morning to putting it in writing and putting it in places where you can see it (inside your jacket, your wallet, even the screen saver of your computer).
3. Tackling big things can be problematic, especially if you have low self esteem. Try building self esteem by breaking up that big thing into little things that you can easily accomplish.
By doing so you will be able to better tackle the tasks ahead of you and feel a sense of accomplishment once you are done with one. At the same time it will also give you the confidence to tackle the next step which will give you more confidence to move on the next, and so on and so forth, until before you know it you have finished one big task. Imagine the boost of confidence your low self esteem will get.
4. Believe in yourself and on who you are as a person. We are all unique individuals and even if we have someone who look like us (i.e. twins) they can never be us, much like we can never be them.
That's why you should never ever compare yourself to other people because there is no comparison - you're just not the same.
When building self esteem you need to understand that we all have individual strengths and weaknesses - you may not be able to do some things that they can but rest assured that they also can't do some things you can.
Focus on that and know that you have your strong points as well - we all do. That way you can gain confidence and self worth.
